Doctoral committee

General remarks applying to all doctoral students at ETH:


D-BIOL specifications:

Each doctoral candidate of the D-BIOL is required to form a doctoral committee, and report it before the aptitude colloquium, in agreement with the supervisor of the doctoral thesis. In D-BIOL an external co-examiner must also already be appointed and approved before the aptitude colloquium.

The doctoral committee in the D-BIOL is composed of at least:

Supervisor of the doctoral thesis: a D-BIOL professor

Second advisor 

  • A person who is independent of the supervisor of the doctoral thesis, a professor of the D-BIOL, adjunct professor of the D-BIOL or Privatdozent of the D-BIOL.
  • Professors who have left ETH can remain second advisor in the D-BIOL for one year; retired professors can extend this period to two years upon request.

In D-BIOL, second advisors are automatically appointed as co-examiners and are therefore members of the examination committee.

Independant co-examiner from outside ETH (external page domain)
i.e. independant external co-examiner

  • External: An active professor from outside ETH Zurich or a person in a professorship equivalent position with proven expertise in the subject area.
  • Independant: No relationship of dependence between the thesis supervisor (and other co-examiners).
  • For non-academic research institutions: group leader, with peer reviewed publications.
  • In the industrial field: at least group leader or head of department in the research sector, with peer reviewed publications.

Further co-examiners: the doctoral committee may be supplemented by further members

After the definitive admission i. e. after passing the aptitude colloquium, committee meetings and status conversations take place at least once a year. Please see annual committee meeting and status conversation for further information. Further meetings may be held at the request of the doctoral candidate or the supervisor.
