ETH GreenLabs: first labs certified for sustainability

Laboratory operations are associated with a considerable environmental impact. It was the goal of a pilot project at ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich to explore the potential for resource-saving laboratory processes. On Wednesday, 31st of January, the first certification ceremony of the pilot took place, and several D-BIOL labs were awarded certificates.

The pilot was launched by ETH Sustainability and Greenlabs Zurich, and implemented under the lead of Sebastian Kahlert (ETH Sustainability), Franziska Brändle and Elisa Dultz, both from the Institute of Biochemistry. The Laboratory Efficiency Assessment Framework (LEAF; external page https://www.ucl.ac.uk/sustainable/take-action/staff-action/leaf-laboratory-efficiency-assessment-framework) was used to improve and evaluate the laboratories’ sustainability along categories like waste, sample & chemical management but also people and research quality.

The following participating labs from the D-BIOL were certified:

  • Jagannathan lab: Bronze certificate
  • Sauer/Zamboni lab, Peter lab: Silver certificate
  • Neurohr lab, Weis lab: Gold certificate
