Research area

Gebhard Schertler’s research focuses on the structural biology of membrane proteins, e.g. the structure and activation of G-protein coupled receptors. This research topic is highly relevant for the pharmaceutical industry to develop new drugs.

Gebhard Schertler has been Professor for Structural Biology at the Department of Biology since 2010. At the same time he is Chair of the Department Biology and Chemistry at PSI (Paul Scherrer Institute) and head of its Laboratory of Biomolecular Research.

He was born in Dornbirn, Austria in 1957.

He studied at the University of Innsbruck in Austria and got his “Magister der Naturwissenschaften” (MSc) in 1984 . In 1989 he graduated with a PhD from the Max-Planck-institute for Biochemistry ( Department of Membrane Chemistry) in Munich.

Gebhard Schertler later worked as a Senior Scientis and Group Leader at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular biology in Cambridge, UK.
