Due to the pending sabbatical leave of Department Chair Prof. Matthias Peter, it was necessary to elect a new department chair and vice chair.

Every year one institute of the D-BIOL invites a high-profile speaker for the so called 'ETH Biology Lecture'. On 2 September 2015, Prof. John C. Reed, head of the unit 'Pharma Research and Early Development' at Roche Pharmaceuticals, delivered a presentation entitled 'Mechanisms regulating cell survival and cell death: From Laboratory to Clinic'.
