Phase-specific signatures of wound fibroblasts and matrix patterns define cancer-associated fibroblast subtypes
A "Matrix Biology" paper by the Werner group (IMHS) shows how wound healing gene expression signatures are expressed in tumors and can be used to predict cancer outcome. The paper establishes a functional link between wound fibroblasts and cancer-associated fibroblasts through expression of certain extracellular matrix genes.
Heterocomplex structure of a polyketide synthase component involved in modular backbone halogenation
A recent "Structure" paper by the Piel group (Institute of Microbiology) in collaboration with the Groll group (Technical University of Munich) demonstrates a novel protein pair responsible for halogenation of complex cytotoxic polyketides.
Phosphorylation-linked complex profiling identifies assemblies required for Hippo signal integration
A recent Molecular Systems Biology paper by the Gstaiger & Aebersold group (IMSB) in collaboration with the Peter group (IBC) developed a new proteomic workflow to study the functional relationships between PTMs and complex formation.
Cytoplasmic contractile injection systems mediate cell death in Streptomyces
In a collaborative paper published in "Nature Microbiology", the Pilhofer group (IMBB) and the Schlimpert group (John Innes Centre, UK) show that a cytoplasmic contractile injection system in the Gram-positive multicellular model organism Streptomyces coelicolor mediates cell death.
Obituary for Prof. Hans M. Eppenberger
Prof. Hans Eppenberger began his work at ETH Zurich in 1970 and became Full Professor of Cell Biology in 1975. He researched and taught at the Institute of Cell Biology of the Department of Biology until his retirement in 2001. Our highly esteemed colleague passed away on 18 February 2023 in his 87th year.
